Picture of esrom cheese

Esrom is made in flat rectangular shapes and is usually wrapped in foil. The yellow paste has a supple texture with irregularly shaped holes. The flavor is quite rich and aromatic and seems to grow on the palate. It gains even more spicy flavors and a stronger aroma as it ages.

Invented in the 1930s, this cheese was said to resemble Port Salut and was, for a time, named Danish Port Salut. In fact, it is a much more interesting cheese than Port Salut. In the 1950s it was renamed for a long-forgotten cheese made by the monks of Esrom.

Well wrapped and kept in a cool place, Esrom will keep for a couple of weeks.

Reviews
superb cheese especially at breakfast

WE LOVE ESROM, BUT HARD TO GET IN USA AND IN CANADA .

Esrom is a wonderful, unusual cheese. It is semi-soft, about the consistency of a Port Salut. However it has a much more pungent flavor if you let it ripen. It is one of the few cheeses that you can totally control by timing your eating with the ripening process. When it is cut from the block, it is very mild. After a few days in the refrigerator, it becomes slightly puncent. After a week, it is very puncent with a strong flavor. Cheese lovers each have their Esrom preferences. Regardless of how ripe, Esrom is a great cheese cor baking or grilling. A grilled Esrom cheese sandwhich or open face sandwich is a true delight. A few seconds in the microwave before eating also makes it great with crackers.

Flavor is good if you can get beyond the aroma...it fills your entire house with its pungency and I love stong flavors and smells...this one has to grow on me.
