Wijnendale is a soft and spicy cheese from the West Flanders region of Belgium. This fine Belgian gourmet cheese has many similarities with Port Salut; it is a full-cream cow's milk, orange-yellow rind and soft yellow paste and yields a soft creamy taste.
The name Wijnendale has strong links with the Belgian history and the mighty castle of Wijnendale. Since the first stone was laid in the 11th century the castle has been closely connected to the history of the county Flanders and the Kingdom Belgium. The Count of Flanders Gwijde van Dampierre rebuilt the originally wooden structure in stone in 1278 and it was in this same castle that he entertained important European noblemen and kings.
